Blockchain Technology Adoption in Supply Chain: A Systematic Review of Barriers, Drivers, and Outcomes with Implications for Iran's Resistance Economy

Abstract
This systematic review synthesizes evidence from 101 articles on blockchain adoption in supply chains, examining barriers, drivers, theoretical models, and outcomes, with specific implications for Iran's resistance economy. A systematic search was performed across six databases (Scopus, Web of Science, IEEE Xplore, ScienceDirect, SpringerLink, and Google Scholar) from 2004 to 2026. Following PRISMA 2020 guidelines, 101 articles were selected. Quality assessment informed interpretive weighting of findings during thematic synthesis. Blockchain adoption faces technical (scalability, security, oracle problem), organizational (cost, skill gaps, management resistance), regulatory (legal uncertainty, data privacy), and cultural barriers. Key drivers include transparency, traceability, cost reduction, trust enhancement, and sustainability. The review identifies a decentralization paradox: implementation may re-centralize power among major technology providers—a critical concern for developing and sanctioned economies. TAM, UTAUT, TOE, and game-theoretic models are widely applied, with performance expectancy and transparency as strongest predictors of adoption. Blockchain represents a governance paradigm shift addressing trust and data sovereignty. Despite barriers, findings inform Iranian policymakers pursuing resistance economy goals: self-sufficiency, transparency, and supply chain resilience. A phased maturity model from readiness to strategic integration is proposed.
